We are thrilled to announce that Rev. Tony Coleman, senior pastor of First Congregational Church of Memphis, will be a featured speaker at General Synod 35!
Rev. Coleman’s leadership and passion for faith, justice, and community engagement have made a profound impact, and we look forward to his inspiring message.
“First Congo is part of the UCC Missouri Mid-South Conference, one of the two sponsoring conferences of the upcoming General Synod. Transitional Conference Minister, the Rev. Mary Nelson, said she has witnessed Coleman’s gift for deep listening in meetings when his comments tend to offer something to “ground every discussion in our faith in a way that crystalizes and expands everyone’s thinking at the same time.”
“Rev. Tony Coleman is, in my opinion, one of the best preachers in the UCC today,” she said. “He’s thoughtful in his craft and thought-provoking in his message. Tony has the ability to speak across generational and geographical experiences, bringing together a diverse congregation to get at the heart of what is universal about our faith,” she said.”

After a year-long search, the United Church of Christ Board’s Search Committee for General Minister and President has made a historic choice in recommending Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia Thompson as nominee. If elected, she would be the first woman, and the first woman of African descent, to lead the denomination.
The decision has been years in the making. Peace UCC, Webster Groves, Mo., recently voted to sell its 2.5-acre campus — home to the congregation since 1920, and including its current 1937 building — to partner with Eden Theological Seminary in a new vision of “Being the Church” in the 21st century.
