Prof. Hartley describes John R. Mott as the “father” of the World Council of Churches. But\, he was much more than that. A Nobel Peace Prize recipient in 1946\, Mott was a friend of US presidents\, a diplomat\, and a “go-between” of sorts with people around the world who were both theological liberals and theological conservatives. In his presentation\, Prof. Hartley will speak about Mott’s life as well as some of the joys and challenges the professor is encountering as he works to writes the biography of Mott.

DESCRIPTION:Vera Emmons’ mother spent her early childhood in a very close family with her sister\, parents and grandparents in Berlin. Then Hitler came to power and everything changed. Mrs. Emmons will recount her mother’s story as she survived multiple concentration camps before being liberated at the end of the war. Our speaker is on the board of the St. Louis Holocaust Museum and also serves as a tour guide at the museum. \n\n\n\nThis program is one of two scheduled for  October\, 2024 as part of Parkway UCC’s Speakers Series programming. The speaker will appear live in Parkway’s Heritage Room.
